You May Not Qualify Immediately

My husband and I just celebrated 15 years of marriage last week. I hadn't been married to my him very long-maybe a few years when we started talking about buying a home. I had a college education and a job as a teacher. Apartment life was getting me down, so my husband and I made an appointment with a mortgage advisor.

He was a very nice, well-dressed man, and he told us that we could afford a $50,000 house. We knew that we could not get a decent home for $50,000, so we were pretty discouraged. He didn't leave us there though. He then proceeded to lay out a plan that would get us from where we were to where we wanted to be. Over the next year, we worked hard on getting to where we needed to be, and we were living in a new home within two years of that meeting.

It amazes me how many people give up after hearing that they cannot afford a home immediately. To be honest, most people do not qualify the first time that they attempt to obtain financing for a home. It is the first step in the process of buying a home, and it could take from 1-10 years to get everything straightened out. So many people give up after hearing that they are not qualified right now. They give up instead of coming up with a plan to get where they want to be.

Don't give up if purchasing a home is one of your dreams. You may not qualify immediately. It is a process that one goes through on the path to home ownership. If you do not have a mortgage advisor who is willing to help you come up with a plan, find another mortgage advisor. The good ones will help you come up with a plan. Remember them when you are finally ready to make that purchase.
